Rene Herse Cranks Have entered production

This notification has just been posted on the Off the Beaten Path  Blog

The new René Herse cranks have entered production. The arms are being forged, the chainrings are being machined, and the crank bolts are being made, each by specialist manufacturers who are among the best in their trade. The photo above shows the final production version of the arms and chainrings. (The crank bolt still is a prototype.)

We plan to have the cranks in stock for the Holidays. We also have finalized the prices: £275.00 for single- and double-chainring cranksets, and £295.00 for a triple. We will offer tandem cranksets as well.

The double-chainring cranks are designed for a 113 mm JIS bottom bracket, resulting in a tread (Q factor) of 142 mm with a standard chainline. (If you ride mostly on the big ring, you can use a shorter BB spindle to move the cranks inward a bit, if your frame permits. This will reduce the tread/Q factor by up to 6 mm.)

The new René Herse cranks are compatible with many bottom brackets, including the excellent SKF bottom bracket available from Shedborn Bikes.

New Crank for and old mount

I have chosen this crank for a fixed conversion on a pretty old frame dating back to the late 50’s, lightweight well made in the East End  of London made by a framebuilder. Paul Villiers of Villiers Velo  made some minor alterations and added some braize ons, removed old lamp bracket holder and various cable run loops, the finished frame I will have back next week ready fro building. The cranks I think are really attractive and are open to 3/32 or 1/8 rings 144 BCD run on a 103 BB or whatever suite your rear chainstay flare and bb shell width. They are pretty reminiscent  of the old campag style fluted cranks and are made of hardened alloy and are very lightwight, I have picture two here one with a GB track ring and the other with Campag style drilled chain ring.

I have a couple in stock at present please enquire for the price and delivery.

Moulton Rohlhoff build

Customer build in a 20 inch Sun ringle rim a Rohlhoff  14 speedhub the rear triangle of the bike was cutomised by Paul Villiers to accomodate the hub using the correct dropouts it was down to me to build the wheel, settled on the one cross pattern using Sapim strongs

Please note if you require a build such as this this hub is not a stocked item for obvious reasons, this wheel is purely on an order basis.

The full range is available to me including spares and tyres etc.

My Own Bikes

Its taken a little while of course being a one man band does not help, but im getting there. I have sold and refurbished a small number of cycles aided by a very good powder coater and some excellent parts suppliers and branded them Kings Road Cyles and they seem to be catching on.

I have of course tipped my hat to Rivendell cycles who have been an influence on my build style as have Fastboy cycles and MAP. I do have a passion fro 650B and have managed to track down an excellent supplier of rims and tyres. Small businesses like mine are always between a rock and a hard place not enough finance to stock a plump shop  and generally not enough room to stock loads of bikes so you look flash in order to attract the magpies, so you go niche market. Is this cutting your nose off to spite your face, I don’t think so because you go with what you know its very dangerous to throw mud at a wall and see what sticks as after 30,60,90 days you have to pay the man, so spare a thought for the little shop he may not have what you need but its more than likely he can get and usually at a competitive price .

Rough Stuff Fellowship

I have joined the Rough Stuff Fellowiship in the UK, which has a long and very colorful history going back to the 1890 s and most recently its resurgence in the 50s. Im very proud I hav e joined such and organization although I could not join them on their local reliability ride this last weekend due to a health issue I will look forward to future runs. I have received all of my bits and pieces including the club magazine which is great reading and the help and information from individuals of whom I contacted was second to none and extremely friendly.

I have some pics of my cycle I prepared for the run last Sunday but could not make. Thanks for Steve for all his help in Rough Stuff home counties welcome to my shop anytime.

Royce Track Hubs One-Off

These are a pair of one off Royce track hubs fabricated for a client for a track bike being constructed by Paul Villiers of Villiers Velo

The Hubs took a long time coming are are truly one off, hand engraved, anodized shell and anodized lockring . The frame

is reaching completion now made from stainless steel .

The were extremely expensive but are one of a kind as Royce had to prepare build hone polish etc in order to get his exacting standard in the final  product.

Cyclo Cross Soma Double Cross

The UK Cyclo Cross season is soon upon us and I have a a frame coming from Soma the Double Cross. I have built a couple of cyclo cross bikes in the last year in my shop for customers and I must admit they are growing on me, a work colleague a fellow cycling instructor capped all by describing the the bike as a bit of mongrel a racing bike for the dirt, the widened chain stays the wider fork crown allowing for a better dirt clearance and narrow 700c knobbly tyres. As I have been growing fonder of the Soma range and having struck up a good relationship with the UK distributor I will have a frame set available in my shop as from Wednesday next week for inspection, I will also take some pics of the bits you cant see on my site. http://www.shedbornbikes.com

I can also build the wheels for these beasts and provide a good range of tyres clinchers as well as tubular
